Hold down the select (center button) while simultaneously holding down the menu button. wait until the apple logo powers off. keep holding it untill the apple logo powers on again. then let go. The ipod should return to the main menu and be back to normal. This problem can be due to a weak or bad battery. Always make sure that your ipod is fully charged before you attempt to connect it to your computer. if it is then the problem persists and you cant restore, change the battery.

Click wheel Not responding to commands - If you charged the battery and it power on but the click wheel won't respond to commands it's likey that you will need to replace it. It is not that difficult. See my video on how to replace an Ipod click wheel for step by step instructions.
Click wheel works but select button doesn't press or work - this can happen when your battery is old and starts to swell. Since the battery is right under the select button (the center button on the click wheel), the swelling of the battery will interfere with the menu buttons operation. Open the Ipod up and remove the old battery. It needs to be replaced anyway. This will fix 2 problems with one repair.
Computer is not detecting ipod - Make sure ipod is fully charged. If it's still not detecting it, get a new original apple sync cable. It also may be a software issue or the USB is occupied with another device with your computer.
try to shut down and reboot your computer and see if it helps. Another idea would be to try it on another computer to see if its indeed if its the computer or the ipod itself that is the problem.
itunes not detecting ipod - See if your computer is detecting the ipod via mass storage. for PC's go to my computer and look for either an E or F drive. you can also look at your menu bar on the bottom and see if its detected. If the computer detects it and your itunes doesnt it could be itunes. make sure you have the latest version of itunes for your operating system with all the updates. if you do then try uninstalling and reinstalling itunes. also make sure that your ipod is fully charged with the wall charger before you connect it to your computer. if it still freezes it may also be a bad sync cable. get a new sync cable and make sure its a cable for your model ipod and that its an original apple sync cable. Many of the genric ones have problems or don't work.
